What is the EU Blue Card?

The EU Blue Card, a residence permit established under Section 18g of the Residence Act [AufenthG] (page in German), is designed for international talents with comparable qualifications who already have a specific job offer from a company in Germany. It offers a simplified visa process. To qualify, applicants must possess a university degree and secure a work contract that meets the minimum gross salary requirement.

EU Blue Card: What are the requirements?

To get an EU Blue Card, you need a university degree. Also, you already must have received a job offer from a company in Germany.

The offer must meet the following requirements:

  • The duration of employment should be a minimum of six months.
  • Your occupation must align with your educational degree.
  • Your employment in Germany should offer a gross annual salary at least  €48,300 (as of 2025)
  • Individuals employed in designated bottleneck professions may be eligible for the EU Blue Card with a reduced minimum gross annual salary requirement currently €43,759.80  (as of 2025)
